Over the past 20 years, Sui Jianguo has continuously reflected upon civilizations of the past, attempting to realize his limitless conceptual practice within a limited three-dimensional space. In his works, Sui Jianguo presents symbol after symbol, yet manages to never be constrained by the "shackles" of any one cultural symbolism in particular. All the while, he makes use of his concept of spirituality as a guide, breaking away from the self. The "Made in China" series has already freed itself from the outer shell of merely "simple" artwork and bears the artist's most important cultural and spiritual references. The conceptual core of "Made in China" elevates the artist's individual artistic creation to focus on the issues of sustainability surrounding globalization. This is not simply an expression of the artist's personal ideas, but more of a means of creating an image for national identity which implies the ultimate symbol of national strength. |
